Stories From The Bhagavatham - Krishna Avatar - Brahma's Brahm - Part 3
Brahma in the meanwhile was having troubles of his own.
After hiding the calves and the kids inside a cave, Brahma
returned to his home in Satyaloka but was refused entrance by the doorkeepers.
He was enraged.
“I am Brahma!” He said angrily. “How dare you prevent me from
entering my own home?”
The doorkeepers laughed. “Our master is already inside. We don’t
know who you are or why you are pretending to be him. If you don’t believe,
come and see for yourself.”
Brahma stepped inside and looked in confusion. There was already
someone there, looking exactly as him. He was sitting in Brahma’s seat. Devi
Saraswati calmly played the veena beside him. The hall was filled with music
and everything went on as usual in Satyaloka.
Brahma got really flustered and returned to Brindavan to see
what was happening there. He was more confused when he saw all the kids and the
calves in their homes, their days going on normally. He rushed to the cave to
check whether his captives were still there. He found the calves and the kids
in the same sleep-induced position that he had placed them in.
Brahma, the creator of the universe, found himself in deep
confusion and mystery, enveloped by the veil of ignorance.
Krishna decided to relieve him of his agony. All at once, Brahma
saw every calf and every child in the form of Krishna, in his chaturbhuj
roopam, with the conch, the discus, the mace and the lotus. Brahma stood in
silent wonder and amazement, perceiving the various Krishnas in front of him.
Then the Krishnas vanished and only the calves and the kids stood in front of
Brahma, who fell at the feet of Krishna and asked for forgiveness. Bowing to
Krishna, he returned to Satyaloka, humbled and wiser.
Krishna collected all the calves whom Brahma had hid in the cave
and as if nothing had happened, returned to the banks of the river, where he
found his friends sitting in a circle, just like they had been a year ago. The
children, not knowing anything said, “Oh you have brought back our calves,
Krishna. It didn’t take you much time to locate them! Come, let us eat. We have
not eaten anything since you left to search for the calves.” Krishna smiled
charmingly and ate with the children.
The group returned to their homes in the evening and each one
told their parents about the killing of Aghasura. Only, a whole year had passed
by and none of them knew, except for Krishna and Balarama!
